Q&A with 2023–2024 MNR Treasurer Pat Paulson
What do you want to accomplish in your role as treasurer?
The primary mission is safeguarding the association’s assets. We need to maintain excellence in providing our core basic services. Additionally, we have a new strategic plan and initiatives, and more broadly need to be responsive to emerging challenges for our industry. Just by itself, the financial aspect is going to be a challenge and we need to stay on top of it with the Finance and Executive committees, as well as the Board. I plan to closely monitor the numbers and serve as a conduit between members and staff regarding our financial statements and position.

What advantages do you see for the treasurer’s expanded two-year term?
The treasurer role can take some time to learn. For those without deep experience, it could take a whole year and then they’re done. So, the two-year term gives the treasurer more time to learn the job. In my case, I hope to come up to speed quickly because I’ve served twice as treasurer with the Minneapolis Area Realtors®, have accounting experience, and was on MNR’s Finance Committee for about 10 years.

Do you do any volunteer work?
Over the years, I’ve volunteered with numerous organizations doing home-buyer workshops. Closer to home, I’ve served on a neighborhood board of directors, and as treasurer for a homeowners’ association. I’m also very involved with the Realtor® Political Action Committee (RPAC) at the local, state, and national level. And with NAR, I serve as a Federal Political Coordinator.

What do you like to do when you’re not working?
I like spending time with my wife, four adult daughters, and five grandchildren. I like staying fit, so I go to the gym pretty much every day. And I like shooting baskets, even though I’m older now and I can’t move as fast. And I did martial arts—Tae Kwon Do—for about 15 years before COVID shut it down. I really miss it and hope to return now that it’s open again. I love live music and dancing. My favorites for dancing are R&B, Reggae, and any kind of World Beat music, especially African.

Speaking of things international, where would you go if traveling abroad?
If I took an extended leave, I would probably go to Kenya because that’s my wife and youngest daughter’s home country. In a way, I’ve become part of the culture through marriage. But visiting would allow me to immerse myself and learn about it on a deeper level and meet more of our family.
