And while one hopes they will never have a home fire, it can happen to anyone. Fire spreads incredibly fast, and it’s important to always be prepared in addition to taking important steps to reduce fire risks in your home.

Here are some tips to stay safe & reduce the risk of fires in your home:

  1. Get a Fire Extinguisher
Having a fire extinguisher is your first line of defense against house fires. Keep a fire extinguisher in every room that is a potential threat – like your kitchen. But also remember that fire spreads incredibly fast, so if you don’t feel confident in your ability to use an extinguisher, it’s better to safely exit your home and call 9-1-1.

  2. Working Alarms Are Important
A smoke detector can save your life, so it’s important to check them regularly. Hold down the button to test – if a noise doesn’t work, make sure to replace the batteries. Then test after replacing batteries. Install a fire alarm on every floor of your home.

  3. Check your dryer
When doing chores, it can be easy to forget to check the dryer lint trap, but you should always check & change your lint trap between laundry loads. It’s a good idea to also periodically check behind your dryer to make sure no lint or small articles of clothing is stuck behind there.

  4. Practice caution with candles
Candles are a favorite during the cooler months & holidays, but they can easily become a fire hazard. Make sure to extinguish candles before you leave a room, and be extra careful when lit near blankets, drapes, furniture, or other objects.

  5. Stay in the kitchen while cooking
Did you know that unattended cooking is the number one cause of home fires? A few seconds is all it takes for a fire to break out. If you need to leave the kitchen, ask someone to watch the stove while you step out.

  6. Properly store flammable items
Aerosol cans like cleaners, hairspray, or shaving cream can potentially be hazardous when exposed to hot temperatures. Keep them away from heat, and store in a cool place.

  7. Fireplace Safety
There’s nothing better than a warm, cozy wood burning fire on a cold night, but it is essential to make sure that the fireplace & chimney are safe and well maintained before you light it up. Homeowners should also make sure to examine the lining of the firebox for cracks or any sign of wear, as well as making sure the fireplace & chimney are cleaned annually.

  8. Electric Cords
Always check an electric appliance’s cords & plugs for any damage. This could easily prevent house fires. Additionally, check the placement of your cord – don’t put a cord under a rug or too close to furniture.

  9. Make A Fire Escape Plan
Lastly, and very importantly: have a fire escape plan. In case of a fire, remember to get out, stay out, and be calm; and never go back into your house for any reason. Make sure to practice your escape plan with your family twice a year. A remember if you are on fire, STOP, DROP, and ROLL.
