Spring is just around the corner in Minnesota! With the sun shining and the snow and ice melting, it’s time to start getting your home ready for the changing of seasons.
Whether you’re a new or seasoned homeowner, here are some important tips and good reminders as we shed our winter coats, open our windows, and welcome the warmer weather.
Check Your AC Unit
Although hot summer days seem a long way off, now is the time to inspect your AC unit to ensure it is in tip-top shape. Check the filter, hose connections, and vacuum any dust that has accumulated during the off-season.
Clean Out Gutters
Just as in the fall, it’s important to clean out any leaves or gunk in the gutters and make sure water runs freely during the spring snowmelt and soaking rains. When functioning properly, gutters and downspouts prevent water from spilling off the roof and pooling around your home’s foundation where it can increase the risk of basement flooding. Gutters also prevent erosion and protect garden beds.
Inspect Your Screens
There’s nothing better than having your windows or porch open during the summer, but if the screens are torn or have holes, bugs and small creatures can invade your home. Repair or replace any screens that are damaged – even if it seems minimal.
Exterior Paint
Dreaming of painting the exterior of your home a new shade? Time to start planning. Don’t break out the brushes and rollers too soon, however. Paint needs time to dry without freezing. Each paint brand is different, but a good rule of thumb is to check the forecast and for a dry day and be sure that the temperature won’t drop below 42 F degrees.
Planting Seeds
Ready to plant those Minnesota State Fair Blue Ribbon veggies or beautiful new flowers? Not so fast! Most plants need warm, sunny conditions to grow, so it’s important to wait until the ground is no longer frozen.
Most Minnesota gardeners will know to wait until the final frost, but if you’re able, you can start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the final frost (usually mid-May).

Check The Basement
As the temperatures rise in Minnesota, and the snow and ice rapidly melt. So, it’s crucial to check your basement for any leaking or dampness.
If you notice a large, melting snow pile close to the foundation, try to drain the water away from your home. Water leaking into the basement can be costly.
