Marketing Monday - Cultivating Relationships with Closing Gifts

A person handing someone a giftClosing gifts are an important customer touchpoint to plan for. A thoughtful closing gift makes a memorable capstone to a transaction and can become a lasting reminder of your excellent service. And small touches like these can help turn clients into life-long advocates who refer you to their friends and family.

But finding the right closing gift for your clients can be tricky. Although it’s tempting to give all clients the same gift, it’s better to think of each one individually and find something that is touching and memorable.

Here are some tips to inspire your search for those perfect closing gifts:

When Possible, Make It Personal

Try selecting items that have some kind of personal connection - a gift card to a local restaurant; a guide book about their new city or neighborhood; or perhaps a tool box for those first-time homebuyers moving into a “fixer upper.”

Show You Were Listening

Did your client mention their love of biking? Their fur babies? Are they new to the state or area? Try using these details to zero in on the perfect closing gift. Your clients will be over the moon that you remember these important details about their lives.

Gift Some Inspiration

Moving into a new home can be overwhelming. Things like choosing paint, updating a space, or adding a new garden can often feel like a herculean task. Try giving the gift of inspiration with a subscription to a home renovation or garden magazine, like the Minnesota State Horticultural Society’s publication the Northern Gardner.

Read the Room

Again, it’s important to really think hard about your clients. Defaulting to wine, a gift card to Lowe’s, or a clock may work for certain clients, but for others it could show you didn’t make a personal connection. Did your clients just downsize their home of 20+ years? Probably best to ditch the clocks, furniture, or anything that takes up considerable space. Did they mention they love breweries? Shift away from the wine and get them a sampler pack from the local brewpub.

When in doubt, you can always ask your clients too. They’ll be flattered that you’re thinking of them and trying to tailor-fit every aspect of the transaction. It’s one more way you can affirm their decision to choose you as their Realtor®, and build lasting relationships for years to come.
