In today’s fast-paced real estate landscape, clients are looking for more than just any agent—they want someone they can trust to confidently navigate complex markets and transactions. While homebuyers and sellers have access to more information than ever, they still rely on Realtors® who have a deep understanding of the sales process and the adaptability to handle any market conditions. The Graduate, Realtor® Institute (GRI) designation is a tool to help Realtors® master the market and distinguish themselves as a go-to expert in their community.
Akin to a bachelor’s degree, the GRI Designation is a course of study that goes beyond the basic requirements to earn and maintain a real estate license. To achieve the GRI in Minnesota, Realtors® must complete 60 GRI credit hours, including 15 required courses covering in-depth topics related to the sales process, legal and regulatory issues, technology, and professional standards. Electives offer the chance to complete the required number of credit hours while customizing the learning experience.
Those pursuing the GRI can take both live and online classes and have up to 5 years to complete the program. Courses generally also count towards the Minnesota Department of Commerce’s yearly CE requirements, allowing participants to get the most value for their time. Once Realtors® complete their credits and pay a one-time $50 application fee, the GRI designation is theirs for life—
GRI grads earn more than just a sense of satisfaction and a string of letters following their names—this designation makes a tangible impact. According to the National Association of Realtors®, agents with this designation typically earn a median income almost double that of non-designees. GRI earners also report a better ability to serve their clients, owed largely to the GRI’s deep dive into topics like the market, policies, and procedures.
“I feel like the GRI designation took my real estate knowledge and ability to help clients to a whole new level,” said Debbie Ogren, a GRI designee and Broker Associate with Integrity Real Estate Group. “I believe that every industry owes it to their clients to be as knowledgeable as possible, especially real estate as we transition into a new era with new laws, technology, and an ever-changing market. The GRI designation calls out that an agent has invested time above and beyond what’s required to be the best in their field.”
