Minnesota Realtors® Secures $20,000 Grant for Tornado-Impacted Families in Detroit Lakes

On the evening of July 6, 2026, a powerful tornado tore through northern Becker County, just north of Detroit Lakes, leaving a path of destruction through homes, businesses, and heavily wooded neighborhoods. A preliminary assessment identified the storm as at least an EF1 tornado, with wind speeds of approximately 110 mph. Two people were injured, and the damage was severe enough that Becker County declared a Local Emergency on July 8, 2026.

At least 31 families have been displaced from homes deemed uninhabitable, and many more households are dealing with significant property damage, debris removal, and temporary relocation while utilities and infrastructure are restored.

Minnesota Realtors® (MNR) is committed to standing with the communities we serve — especially in moments like this. That's why we're proud to share that MNR has secured a $20,000 grant from the REALTORS® Relief Foundation (RRF) to provide direct financial assistance to families impacted by this disaster.

MNR + LCAR Partner for Local Impact

This effort is being led in close partnership with the Lakes Country Association of REALTORS® (LCAR), the local REALTOR® association serving the Detroit Lakes and greater Becker County area. LCAR CEO Kari Sahr will work directly with impacted families, helping connect them to this resource.

"Our members live in these communities, and many of our neighbors have lost their homes or seen significant damage to their property," said Kari Sahr, CEO of LCAR. "We are proud to work alongside Minnesota Realtors® and the REALTORS® Relief Foundation to make sure families know this help is available and get the support they need as they begin to rebuild their lives."

"This grant reflects who we are as an association — neighbors helping neighbors," added Josh McFall, CEO of Minnesota REALTORS®. "By partnering with LCAR and the REALTORS® Relief Foundation, we can put real resources into the hands of families working to recover."

To help spread the word, LCAR is also coordinating with the American Red Cross and the President of the association, so that families connecting with relief workers on the ground hear about this program directly.

How to Apply for Assistance

If you or someone you know was impacted by the July 6 tornado, here's what you need to know:

  • Who it's for: Homeowners in the Detroit Lakes/Becker County area who were displaced or experienced property damage as a result of the July 6 tornado.

  • When to apply: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis — there is no set deadline, so don't wait to reach out.

  • What happens next: The MNR Operations team reviews each application to confirm it meets grant guidelines and eligibility requirements.

  • Questions or help applying: LCAR is actively working with families in the area — if you're connected with LCAR, the Red Cross, or your local Lake Association, they can help guide you through the process.

About the REALTORS® Relief Foundation

This assistance is made possible by the REALTORS® Relief Foundation (RRF), a national nonprofit that provides housing-related aid to families recovering from disasters across the country. Minnesota REALTORS® is a longstanding supporter of RRF and has contributed financially to the foundation in 2026. We're Here for Our Communities

Disasters like this remind us why the REALTOR® community exists beyond real estate transactions — it's about people, homes, and neighborhoods. Minnesota REALTORS® and LCAR will continue working together, and with partners like the Red Cross and RRF, to make sure families affected by this tornado get the support they need to recover and rebuild.
