Advice for Newer Realtors®

By Minnesota Realtors® posted 10-20-2020 07:04 AM

Congratulations on becoming a Realtor®! Below is advice from experienced Realtors® across the state to help make your first year and beyond a success. Good luck!

"Grab every piece of a person’s contact information and store it. Either in a CRM or a simple spreadsheet. Data is king!"
—   Brandon Johnson

"My first advice is to make a hot list of your closest friends and family that live in your market.  Get their addresses, and start mailing them monthly postcards about your real estate business."
—   Michael Hartung

"Think about what can help your business and is FREE. Brokers can help with what is offered by the company at no charge; Building relationships with people….no charge; What does local Association provide….no charge. Do not be a Secret Agent – be sure to let everyone know you are a Realtor® by wearing broker gear and a nametag and getting out to Chamber and Community events. Set a weekly and monthly budget and do not go over what you can afford. And lastly, partner with agents in your brokerage to see if anyone needs help… volunteer to help an agent on their floor time (do as much floor time as possible)."
—   Sandy Swanson

"Fill your calendar with appointments. That is your goal. If you do that you will be successful."
—   Budd Batterson

"Being a Realtor® is not only about houses, it's about people. I would even say it's more about relationships and building trust, than it is about houses. As such, get involved in your community through neighborhood/school organizations, or through religious groups, or in local politics - these activities will greatly grow your trust in the community in which you work, which will be invaluable."
—   Paige Kahle

"Work on your GRI Designation! I call this the Realtor® Road Map To Success! I remember when I first got my license, and after I passed my exam I thought “now what”? It is good if you can find someone in your office that can mentor you and if you have questions, as you will, someone who is willing to take some time to answer your questions."
—   Corey Stittsworth

"My advice is to find a great mentor and don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions! Take all of the classes and read all of the books! No matter how long you have been in real estate there will always be lots to learn. When times get tough, remind yourself why you chose this career… you can help make a difference in people's live, have flexibility, there no ceiling to how many transactions you can do, and the ability to give back both time and $$. Lastly, have fun! Real estate can be stressful at times, but it should be fun for both you and your clients."
—   Meta Webb

"Throw yourself under the bus! Admit you know nothing and hook your wagon up to someone who does. The 1st year I got very good at saying to my clients "I don't know the answer to that... but I know someone who does. It's important for me to get it right on your behalf!" It's been 24 years now and still, time to time, I have to say that phrase."
