Program provides professional development for people from diverse backgrounds seeking a career in real estate
On December 2, 2022, Minnesota Realtors® (MNR) announced the names of 12 Realtors® selected to participate in the 2023 Pathway to Achievement (PTA) program. Launched in 2021, PTA is designed to promote diversity within the state’s Realtor® membership by helping those not in Minnesota’s racial majority build more successful careers. This year’s group was chosen from 21 applicants who are new to the profession or still working on earning their real estate licenses. After evaluation by MNR’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee, the Professional Development Committee, and staff from MNR and local associations, the final candidates were selected based on their background, needs, and demonstrated commitment to a career in the real estate industry.

“The Pathway to Achievement program is so significant because it allows entrance into an industry that historically has been restricted,” said Richelle Taylor, DEI chair. “Financial requirements for getting into the industry are high, with no guarantees of income coming back. Pathway allows people an opportunity to get started and to be a part of the association as well through volunteering.”

Participants in PTA are assigned a broker mentor who works closely to assist them in developing their careers. Additionally, each Realtor® in the program receives one year of paid national, state, and local association dues, and six months of MLS and Supra eKey fees. Recipients can also attend educational events and work toward earning the Graduate Realtor Institute (GRI) designation with six of the 15 required classes provided free of charge. A select number of other courses are also available.

“Through the Pathway to Achievement Program, my mentor encouraged me to engage in different aspects of the industry that I wouldn’t have otherwise,” said Quincy Ballard, a Realtor® who participated in the program in 2022. “For example, one of the requirements is to join a committee. Even though I come from a background of getting engaged and involved, I don’t think I would have joined the Government Affairs Committee within my first six months.”
