Realtor® Continuing Education Requirements

Whether you're a new Realtor® or you're a seasoned pro at the peak of your career, it's important to keep tabs on the Federal and your State's Realtor® Continuing Education Requirements to ensure the maintenance of your license. 

Throughout the year, Minnesota Realtors® offers a wide range of continuing education training with experienced, professional instructors for you to complete your continuing education requirements. Check out our calendar to view upcoming courses and plan your annual curriculum.


Minnesota Department of Commerce (DOC) Realtor® Continuing Education Requirements

DOC Realtor® Continuing Education Requirements

The Department of Commerce (DOC) requires all real estate salespersons and real estate brokers to successfully complete 30 hours of approved real estate continuing education (CE) during their initial license period and each succeeding two-year license period.

At least 15 of the 30 credit hours must be completed during the first 12 months of that period.

A minimum of 30 credit hours of approved courses each two-year license period must include:

  • 1 credit hour from a class or classes in fair housing
  • 1 credit hour per licensing period from a class or classes in agency law
  • The annual assigned required module. Required module titles* and credit hours are subject to change each year.

Please Note:

  • No credit will be earned if you previously got credit for the same course during the same licensing period.
  • You will not get credit for more than eight hours of CE in one day.

Contact your course provider if you took a course that is not listed on your CE transcript. The DOC cannot assist you with this issue. All completed CE courses must be uploaded by the course provider.

DOC Fair Housing Training Requirements

As part of the continuing education requirements that is due each license year and biannually in Minnesota, all residential real estate brokers and salespersons* must complete specific module training that covers topics in real estate that are significant and of current interest in the real estate market and profession. These requirements are created and/or approved by the MN DOC. 

Please note: The annual MN DOC requirements around Fair Housing and Agency ARE NOT the same as NAR’s and must be completed separately. 

The Minnesota Department of Commerce (MN DOC) continuing education requirements include: 

  • Agency Laws: At least 1.0 CE hour
  • Fair Housing: At least 1.0 CE hour  

Keep in mind that you cannot retake the same continuing education course for credit within the same licensing period. 

*Commerical-Only Exemption  
“’Commercial-only brokers and salespersons who are engaged solely in the commercial real estate business and whose commercial-only status has been verified with the Commerce Department through the required filing do not have to complete a course on agency law, a course on fair housing, and a specific module training course, but must fulfill all other continuing education requirements.” — MN DOC Licensing Guide 

National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) Continuing Education Requirements

National Association of REALTORS® Code of Ethics Training Requirements

NAR's Code of Ethics, adopted in 1913, was one of the first codifications of ethical duties adopted by any business group. The Code ensures that consumers are served by requiring REALTORS® to cooperate with each other in furthering clients' best interests. 

NAR's Board of Directors approved a change to the Code of Ethics training requirement, extending it from every two years to every three years. 

REALTORS® are required to complete ethics training of not less than 2 hours, 30 minutes of instructional time. The training must meet specific learning objectives and criteria established by the National Association of REALTORS®. 

Training may be completed through NAR’s online courses or through another method, such as online or classroom courses via local/state associations. Read the consequences for failing to complete Code of Ethics training.

Current Training Cycle
January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2027

Failure to complete training during any cycle will lead to suspension of membership for the January and February immediately following the cycle deadline, with termination of membership starting March 1 after the cycle deadline.

National Association of REALTORS® Fair Housing Training Requirements

REALTORS® are required to complete Fair Housing / Anti-Bias Training upon becoming a member, and every 3 years thereafter, coinciding with the Code of Ethics training timeline. This requirement is in addition to the Code of Ethics training. Qualified training must be of not less than 2 hours of instructional time. The training must meet specific learning objectives and criteria established by the National Association of REALTORS®. This requirement will begin January 1, 2025 with a deadline of December 31, 2027. 

Training may be completed through NAR’s online courses or through another method, such as online or classroom courses via local/state associations.

*Exemptions to Module Training

The Fair Housing, Agency Law, and the Module Training CE requirements do not apply to commercial-only salespersons and brokers engaged solely in the commercial real estate business, and who file with the commissioner a verification of this status. You must notify the Department of Commerce yearly, before June 30th. Primary Brokers can enable and disable this designation online within PULSE Portal. The feature is called: "Verify Commercial-Only Designations."
